Washing machines can be a bit of a grudge purchase. There are far more enjoyable ways to spend hundreds – or even thousands – of dollars.

But spending more money won't necessarily buy you a better washing machine: there are plenty of more affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests, matching or even beating more expensive machines.

There are plenty of affordable models on the market that performed well in our lab tests

In fact, of the 14 machines our experts recommend, five of them cost less than $1500 – so if you check our detailed washing machine reviews before you buy you can save yourself hundreds on a new front loader.

"It's important to consider both price and performance when buying a new front loader," says CHOICE whitegoods expert Denis Gallagher

"While there are some great performers at the cheaper end of the scale, there are also some duds – this is why it's vital to do your research before handing over your credit card."

Are front loader washing machines worth the extra money?

Front loaders are generally a bit more expensive than top loaders, due to how they're built.

But although you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll generally pay less in water and electricity bills over the entire life of the appliance, so it could end up costing about the same or even less in the long run.

While you'll pay more upfront for a front loader, you'll generally pay less in water and electricity bills

Not to mention that front loaders are more gentle on your clothes than top loaders, so you won't have to replace your favourite t-shirts as quickly if you use a front loader – that's more savings!

But that doesn't mean you need to spend a fortune for a great-performing front-loading washing machine.

Exclusively for CHOICE members, we'll reveal the five machines that deliver great performance on a budget.

If you just want to get straight to the best products, you can jump to the results now.

The front loader washing machines not to buy

Knowing what not to buy can be just as useful as knowing what to buy. Here are the washing machines our experts rated the lowest.

You'll notice that some of them are quite cheap – but even at these low prices, our experts don't recommend them.

The best washing machine brands in Australia

Each year, we rank washing machine brands, assessing them on their average test scores, reliability, customer satisfaction and how many of their products score the coveted CHOICE expert seal of approval.

The best front loader washing machine brand for 2023 is: Miele.

Here are the best brands for 2023, along with their CHOICE Best Brand scores:

  1. Miele – 87%
  2. Bosch – 84%
  3. Samsung – 83%
  4. LG – 82%

Miele has taken out the Best Brand washing machine prize for six years in a row, sharing the top spot with LG in 2019.

…but don't buy on brand alone

While the four brands above have well-founded reputations, here at CHOICE we know that buying based on brand alone is sometimes a recipe for disappointment: even the best brand sometimes delivers duds.

Even the best brand sometimes delivers duds

And focusing solely on one brand in your search for the perfect appliance can mean you overlook other products offering comparable performance for a much smaller price tag.

Machines from the same brand can vary widely in terms of performance, features, capacity, energy efficiency, and more, so don't assume that all products from a reputable manufacturer will give you what you want.

The best thing to do is to focus on individual models by checking CHOICE reviews to find the best washing machines before you buy.

The most reliable washing machine brands

We sent out a survey to 3575 CHOICE members who own a washing machine to find out which washer brands are the most reliable.

We asked members about whether they've run into any problems with their washing machine in the past 12 months. We also take into account the age of the products so we can compare fairly between brands.

The most reliable washing machine brand for 2023 is Bosch, followed by LG, Samsung and Miele.

(Note that the survey doesn't distinguish between top and front loaders; these results are based on washing machines more generally rather than specific machine types.)

What are the best front loader washing machines under $1500?

westinghouse wwf9024m5wa

Westinghouse WWF9024M5WA

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 76%
  • Capacity: 9kg
  • Price: $1199

While Westinghouse didn't make the cut in our Best Brand list, this machine tops the table of front loaders under $1500.

This just goes to show that buying on brand alone means you could miss out on a great machine at a great price.

It'll take the strain off your power bills, your wallet, your time and your ears: it's a winner all round!

The WWF9024M5WA will get your clothes clean effectively, cheaply, quietly and quickly. Aside from being the top scorer in this list, it's also the cheapest to run and one of the quietest.

It has a reasonably short cycle time (110 minutes) compared to other front loaders, but still manages to get clothes cleaner than some machines that wash for longer.

So to recap: it'll take the strain off your power bills, your wallet, your time and your ears. It's a winner all round!

bosch wga244u0au

Bosch WGA244U0AU

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 75%
  • Capacity: 9kg
  • Price: $1299

Bosch is one of the frontrunners in our Best Brand recommendations, and this $1299 model is another top pick of the sub-$1500 bunch.

It's energy-efficient, lets you add items after the cycle has started (a feature sometimes lacking in front loaders), and the Bosch brand has one of the highest reliability ratings of all washing machine brands we've surveyed.

It's energy efficient, lets you add items after the cycle has started, and Bosch has one of the highest reliability ratings

The only downside to this machine is that it has a very long cycle time of 222 minutes, which our experts marked it down on.

But with such good performance at such a low price, we think it's worth the time investment.

electrolux ewf8024q5wb

Electrolux EWF8024Q5WB

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 75%
  • Capacity: 8kg
  • Price: $1149

The cheapest of these budget superstars, this Electrolux definitely delivers great bang for your buck.

It's also one of the cheapest to run: we estimate that it'll set you back around $730 over 10 years – so the savings will continue long after you've bought it.

And with a relatively short cycle time of 120 minutes, it'll also save you time.

It punches well above its weight, scoring as well as some models that cost well over $2000

Unfortunately, it is one of the thirstiest machines in this list, using 65 litres per wash. But compared to top loaders that can use more than 100L per load, it's still relatively thrifty on the H2O.

All in all, the EWF8024Q5WB punches well above its weight, scoring as well as some models that cost well over $2000, so it's well worth a look.

lg wv10 1410w

LG WV10-1410W

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 74%
  • Capacity: 10kg
  • Price: $1499

This LG sits at the top of the price range for our cheaper options, but it does deliver great performance for the price.

Its performance for dirt removal, water efficiency, rinse performance and spin efficiency were all on point.

And it comes with an added feature: a detergent auto dose, which gives you flexibility to either add detergent yourself or let the machine take care of it.

This LG delivers great performance for the price.

Unfortunately it does have a long cycle time of 195 minutes, and it's relatively expensive to run, so consider these factors if you're thinking of buying it.

samsung ww12tp04dsh

Samsung WW12TP04DSH

  • CHOICE Expert Rating: 74%
  • Capacity: 12kg
  • Price: $1449

The largest machine in this list, the 12kg capacity Samsung WW12TP04DSH delivers great bang for your buck.

Even with its larger capacity, it's cheap to run and uses a thrifty 46L of water for a load.

While its cycle time of 159 minutes is by no means short, it's a full hour faster than the Bosch. But if you're short on time it may not be the best choice for you.

The largest machine in this list, this 12kg Samsung delivers great bang for your buck

Aside from its cycle time, our experts' only other criticism is that it lacks a hand-washable woollens wash, so you can only put machine-washable woollens in.

Still, having to wash your jumpers in the sink is a small price to pay for such good performance.

The best of the rest

These machines didn't quite make the cut-off to be recommended by CHOICE experts, but they still scored well and are worth considering – especially since some of them come in at under $1000.

Several of them were let down by their gentleness scores, including the Fisher & Paykel WH9060P4, which scored just 50% in this test. While they did perform well on our other tests, gentleness is worth considering as it can affect the life of your clothes.
